5 Things to Look for in a Nursing Home

Sending off a loved one in the care of a nursing home will not be easy. However, knowing that your dear ones are safe is a big relief. Picking the right nursing home from a multitude of care facilities requires in-depth analysis, research and comparison of various institutions to arrive at one that offers trustworthy, compassionate and efficient services.

Before starting your hunt for nursing homes, it is better to get first-hand recommendations in order to narrow down your search list. When you are through this step, make personal visits to each institution and look for the following things:

  1. The Food

Food is without doubt an important element of one’s daily life, and so should be given special attention. Check out the nursing home’s cafeteria, and see if food not only meets the dietary standard but is also palatable and visually encouraging.

  1. The Atmosphere

Be observant of the sounds you hear and the scent you smell. If patients are yelling or moaning, this may not necessarily be a negative indicator. However, the important thing to look out for is how the workers respond to the patients. Similarly, a whiff of something unpleasant isn’t of much concern since it is pretty common with old age. However, do look out for stale whiff of urine since that will indicate a lack of hygiene on the workers’ part.

  1. Activities

Observe how residents spend their spare time. A good nursing home facility will have a daily calendar of activities that members can participate in. If your loved one happens to be room-bound, makes sure activities are brought to their room.

  1. The Staff

If you see the staff working extra shifts, it may indicate a shortage of employees, which in turn can affect patient care.

  1. Personal Needs

Observe closely how the management and staff handle a patient’s personal needs. If your loved one requires 5 diaper changes in a day whereas the facility is willing to provide only three, that could be a problem. Patients should be treated differently in accordance with their varying needs.

These are just some of the many factors that need to be taken into account prior to selecting the right nursing home.
